The Creative Sovereignty Framework: Your Approach to Podcast Strategy
Are you feeling stuck in podcasting or your creative work? I mean, are you wondering, is it really worth it?
I’ve been working on a podcast strategy framework because this question keeps coming up. Not everyone can work with me 1:1, and I wanted to make this available to anyone who needs it.
Now listen, my language may or may not be for you. If all the reflective ‘ish doesn’t work for you, delete the adjectives or find a synonym that floats your boat. The work is still the work, regardless of what you name it.
Let’s dive into what I call a Creative Sovereignty Session, a "sacred pause" designed to help you reclaim your authentic voice in a world full of noise, because, Lord, we need it.
While I offer these as guided sessions, the truth is, the magic isn't in me; it's in the process of creating a container for you to hear your own wisdom. And you can absolutely create that container for yourself.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it. My hope is that this helps you find the clarity you need, right now.
Step 1: The Foundation – Ask the Deep Questions
Before you can build, you need a foundation. This starts with being fiercely honest with yourself. Set aside 30-60 minutes and journal your answers to these questions. Don't censor yourself.
- Your Core Mission: In a sentence or two, what is the real "why" behind your work? What change are you truly hoping to create for your listener or audience?
- Your Biggest Challenge: What is the single biggest point of friction you're facing? Is it audience growth, creator burnout, content strategy, or something deeper?
- Measuring What Matters: Beyond download numbers or likes, how do you truly define success for your work? In a perfect world, how would you measure your impact?
- Your Desired Transformation: Imagine it's six months from now and you feel incredible about your work. What does it look and feel like? What specific, tangible outcomes have you achieved?
Step 2: The Sifting – Find the Medicine in Your Own Words
The answers you need are likely already in your body of work. The medicine is in the sifting. (You can absolutely quote me on that.) What’s left after the sifting is Your Conversation.
- Gather Your Materials: Collect everything you’ve created over the last year (or more). This includes old show notes, blog posts, social media captions, newsletters, and even personal journal entries related to your work.
- Find Your "Language That You Can Repeat": Read through your materials with a highlighter. What words, phrases, and ideas come up again and again? What topics can you not shut up about? This is the unique language of your brand and your soul.
- Identify "Your Conversation": From these recurring themes, identify the core conversation that only YOU can lead. This conversation becomes your orienting principle.
Step 3: The Distillation – Craft Your Guiding Statement & Roadmap
Now, you take all that raw material from your sifting and distill it into a clear, actionable plan.
- Create Your Purpose Statement: Using the resonant language you highlighted, write a single "purpose statement" that serves as a strong intention and continuous reminder of why your voice is at the microphone. This statement should feel like coming home.
Use this template to get you started: “I create for / speak to / hold space for [who or what matters most to you], especially when they are [what they’re wrestling with, longing for, or ready to reclaim]. I do this through [your creative expression, process, or presence], to help bring forth [what you want to see healed, remembered, or transformed], in a way that honors [a value, principle, or personal truth you will not abandon].”
- Build a Simple Roadmap: Based on that statement, outline a simple roadmap with three parts:
- The Foundation: How will I stay grounded in this mission daily or weekly? (e.g., a weekly journaling practice, a morning intention).
- The Vessel: What one or two systems (tech, workflow, schedule) need to change to support this mission and reduce my friction?
- The Invitation: How will I clearly and authentically invite people into my world (to listen, to join my community, to work with me)?
Step 4: The Calendarization – Make It Real
Listen, you can’t sit around and just think about all the things. You did that. Now it’s time to do the thing. Turn your roadmap into a tangible project.
- Create Monthly Checklists: Break your simple roadmap down into a 3 or 6-month plan. What is one thing you can do each month to move forward in each area (Foundation, Vessel, Invitation)?
- Work in Cycles: Don't feel pressured to publish relentlessly. Consider working in intentional cycles or seasons. This allows for periods of creation and periods of rest, which is far more sustainable. I guarantee that you are already working in cycles; you’ve simply not realized it.
This process of inquiry, sifting, distilling, and planning is a powerful act of creative sovereignty. It’s about choosing to bind yourself to your own wisdom.
You have everything you need to do this. The answers are not outside of you; they are waiting for you to create the space to listen. I hope this guide helps you do just that.
And hey, if you want to work directly with me through this process, I’m here for you! Let's get your podcast strategy going!
